  • 2,6 diisopropyl phenol
  • dervived from soybean and lecithan
  • 95-99% protein bound
  • elimination half life 1.5-3 hours
  • eliminated in the liver by glucorinindation 
  • ideal agent for most healthy individuals for induction and sedation purposes

Mechanism of action:

  • binds to gabaA receptors leading to increased influx of chloride ions leading to hyperpolization of the neurons.
  • Chloride channel of Gaba receptor:
  • side effects:
    • pain on injection
    • myoclonus-usually mild
    • Reduced SVR due to vasodilation
    • Resperatory depression, esp with use of respiratory depressant drugs, and conditions(Obstructive Sleep Apnea).
    • dystonia-rare
    • reduced cerebral blood flow, dec cerebral oxgen demand CRMO2, dec ICP
    • Dec intraocular pressure by as much as 50%.

Prone to bacterial contamination. Throw out if drawn up in syringe after six hours.
